Two of the top New Year's resolutions for Americans is to get in shape and/or to stop drinking so much alcohol. Here's what typically happens if a "normal drinker" completely cuts out booze for the entire month of January.

According to a study from 2013 that included 850 "normal drinkers," participants lost an average of 3.5 pounds, became less likely to develop diabetes and had lower cholesterol levels.

They also slept better, found it easier to concentrate and lowered the amount of fat in their liver by an average of 15%.  Which is important, because a fatty liver can lead to liver disease.

A similar new study found that not drinking for a month can actually change your drinking patterns as well. Participants who stopped drinking for a full month claim that they were still drinking significantly less than they were before the study, 6 months after it was over.
