Missoulians have been enjoying a spectacular fall season for the past few weeks, but that pleasant weather is coming to a close after this weekend.

Meteorologist Mike Johnson with the National Weather Service said on Thursday, October 24 that winter weather will arrive late Sunday night and into Monday morning.

“We do expect a system to move out of Canada and will bring with it much colder temperatures, strong winds and along with that some snow, although not much in the valleys of Western Montana,” Johnson said. “The bigger issues will be cold temperatures. Sunday’s high will be in the 50′s, but on Monday we’ll see temperatures drop by 20 to 30 degrees, and winds will gust up to 45 miles per hour.”

Johnson said the main concern will be roads turning slick very rapidly.

“Starting Sunday night, moisture may start as rain, but it will quickly change over to snow,” Johnson said. “With the surge of moisture on Sunday night, we could see any moisture on the road flash-freeze, making for unexpected slick conditions.”

Johnson said temperatures will begin to moderate by Tuesday and Wednesday.
