Montanans love playing in the water during the summer, but being safe is also important. The Coast Guard Auxiliary is offering a boater safety class in Missoula on Saturday, July 20, 2019 from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. FWP Information and Education Program Manager Vivaca Crowser says the class will take place at Sportsman's Warehouse.

“It is a great chance for younger boaters, new boaters, and longtime boaters who just want a good refresher on boating laws, safety equipment, and safe boat driving techniques,” Crowser said. “This is a great chance to get that done.”

According to Crowser, now is the best time to go over those safety tips.

“We are obviously entering into the height of the summer recreation season on our lakes and our reservoirs,” Crowser said. “If you haven’t done a lot of boating, or even if you have, it is a great time of year to review those safety practices. Unfortunately, we have accidents every year. Anything we can do to prevent that is really important.”

Class graduates will receive a safety certificate, required for youth 13 and 14 years of age that want to operate a motorboat or a personal watercraft rated over 10 horsepower in Montana. The course costs $10 and folks can call Sportsman's Warehouse at 406-523-9000 to register.
