A 3rd Rock Star Found the Ultimate Montana Hideout
Montana has no shortage of secret treasures, but this is something else. There’s John Lithgow, the iconic actor whose face you know from seventy-five different film and television roles. Who just so happens to have a cabin near Flathead Lake and calls it home year-round.

You most likely recognise him as the awkwardly intelligent alien Dick Solomon in 3rd Rock from the Sun. Or how about one of my favorite roles where John had to grapple with Bigfoot-sized emotions in Harry and the Hendersons? Either way, what’s stranger about this premise is that Lithgow has always been good at making the bizarre and supernatural seem truly normal. So Montana, frankly, is a flannel shirt for him.
It’s true that many celebrities “summer” in Montana, but John Lithgow winters here, puts up with summers choked in smoke, and everything in between.
According to a recent interview with Esquire, John said
My wife is from Montana” he said. “We have this cabin on a gorgeous lake, Flathead Lake in Montana, and we try to get as much of the summer as we can there every year. We have two horses, and we ride in the woods.
He does show his face occasionally, not that he doesn’t have confidence, but because Montanans are just like that, cool. You might run into him in a hardware store or a diner and not quite know it.
In a way, it’s perfect when you think of it. The man who made aliens seem like family and Bigfoot like your creepy uncle now resides in one place on earth that likely has both.
John was recently a cardinal in "Conclave" and is set to portray the wizard Dumbledore in HBO’s Harry Potter.
