Avenged Sevenfold’s Synyster Gates on Newborn Son: I Didn’t Cry When He Came Out, I Cried When I Had to F—king Leave
A few days ago, Avenged Sevenfold were forced to cancel their opening slot for Metallica in Philadelphia because guitarist Synyster Gates’ wife went into labor. The shredder told us he welcomed a baby boy into the world, but had to leave shortly thereafter to make Metallica’s New Jersey performance. Loudwire Nights host Toni Gonzalez had a chance to speak with Syn yesterday (May 15) to talk about his new role as Dad (listen above).
We asked Gates what his first two days with his new son were like and how it felt to leave so soon after his birth. “The first day was tough, the second day was incredible,” Gates told us. “I can’t wait to get home. I’m glad we’ve got like 20 days off.”
As for balancing Avenged Sevenfold and fatherhood, Synyster has found that to be “the hardest part” so far. The guitarist explained, “As a father, when your child comes out, you’re kind of welling up because of what your wife is going through, but the minute the crazy, gray baby comes out and it looks like a 90-year-old version of you, you get scared to death, like, what the f—k have I done?”
Syn continues, “The day progresses and your family is crying, it’s all amazing. The next day, you get that time alone with you and your wife and then you develop the bond and then it’s f—ked when you have to leave. I didn’t cry when the kid came out, but I cried when I had to f—king leave, it’s horrible.”
Synyster will be able to spend some quality time at home, as Avenged Sevenfold have a three-week layoff following last night's show. As for the Philly fans, A7X just announced a June 21 show to make up for the gig they missed.
