Bird Flu Hits Near Missoula: Local Flock Wiped Out in Outbreak
Montana, bird flu is no longer a distant concern...it’s here.
Recently, east of Missoula, Christy Cummings lost nearly 50 chickens from her beloved flock to the bird flu.
According to a report from KPAX. Within days, Christy's entire flock was gone.
When I got home, there were quite a few more birds dying and dead, they literally were all over the yard. From Wednesday night till Sunday, Sunday afternoon, twoish. It was close to 50 birds. I called the state vet office to report the high mortality rate because, at that point, I knew something was really wrong
Her flock was the second confirmed case in Missoula County in two weeks. State officials are sounding the alarm for poultry owners, as the virus spreads rapidly and can devastate flocks within days.
Bird flu isn’t just a problem for poultry. It’s been found in wild birds, grizzly bears, and even dairy cows. For people who raise any birds, it’s especially critical: if the virus hits your flock, all birds must be euthanized to stop further spread.
Protect Your Flock
If you own chickens or other poultry, here’s how you can lower the risk:
- Secure Your Feed and Water: Keep wild birds away from your flock’s food and water.
- Keep Birds Enclosed: Limit exposure by housing your flock in coops or enclosed areas.
- Report Issues Quickly: If your flock has sudden deaths, contact the Montana state vet’s office immediately.
This heartbreaking outbreak serves as a reminder: bird flu is here, and prevention is key. If you’re raising poultry, secure your flock and stay vigilant to help protect Montana communities.
