A Missoula man was killed in a motorcycle crash Sunday evening near Lolo.

Montana Highway Patrol Trooper Adam Gane said speed was a factor in the fatal crash.

"The 28 year-old male was eastbound on Highway 12 at mile marker 10 at about 6 p.m.," Gane said. "He was attempting to make a left-hand turn when his motorcycle came in contact with the metal guardrail. He traveled a fair distance while in contact with the guardrail, when at some point he became separated from his motorcycle, and received fatal injuries. He was wearing a helmet. The motorcycle traveled for a ways before coming to rest in a grassy ditch."

Gane said even though speed appeared to have been a factor, it was not clear if alcohol may have also played a part in the fatal accident.

The Missoula County Sheriff's Office has identified the victim as Ryan Cole, 28, of Missoula.
