From Times Square to Montana: The Story of ‘Griz Vision’
Do you remember Griz games before we won the National Title in 1995? My, how far we have come! The evolution of the Grizzlies home field has developed quickly over the last 30 years. From Dornblaser field to Washington/Grizzly stadium.
I remember working EVERY home game at WA/GRIZ in the championship year of 2001. I was there when John Edwards threw the winning TD pass. I remember the BIG GUY in denim overalls dancing his butt off every time we played "COTTON EYED JOE." His dance was infectious, but it could have been broadcast to the entire stadium. If only we had a GIANT TELEVISION SCREEN.
After bringing home the National Title in 2001, the Grizzlies faced off against Hofstra in a pre-season faceoff at WA/GRIZ. It is rumored that New York school brought along a giant screen with them. A jumbotron screen direct from Times Square.
According to gogriz.com
A new Griz Vision jumbotron, with ancillary screens to its left and right was installed in the summer of 2016. The new screen features HD-quality video, and measures 32 feet high by 55 feet wide, approximately twice the size of the old display. Featuring live video, team branding and statistics, the video screen will transform the game-day experience at Washington-Grizzly Stadium. The original Griz vision was added in 2002. That screen came to UM from New York City and Times Square.
I remembered this fun fact while at the game this past weekend. It reminded me of how cool it was that the used screen was from the heart of New York City. Especially only one year following the attacks of 9/11.
