Getting Started On Your Fall Decorations
In my opinion, it's NEVER too early to start decorating your home for fall. Transitioning out your bright fun summer colors for warm cuddly fall ones will give your place that nostalgic feeling you're looking for.
The trick to getting each room of your house looking like a Pinterest board WITHOUT breaking the bank is simple and broken into 3 parts:
- Know When the Sales Are:
- For example - I impulsively stopped into Michaels the other day while I was out running errands on Reserve and stumbled upon a mini decorating miracle. The entire fall section was 40% off! Plus I'm a Michaels rewards member so I was able to stack up the savings. Michaels is by far one of the best places to shop for holiday decorations, but you should NEVER buy something full price there! They ALWAYS have sales and holiday decorations go through stages of being 40% off at least a couple of times before the holiday actually hits and then 50%+ off after the holiday. So look out for Michaels advertisements in the paper or online so you know when to go in and get the best deals! Also become a rewards member lol
- Just FYI, I have it on good authority from one of the Missoula Michaels team members that the super cute Halloween decorations will go on sale (40% off) in mid-September! So be prepared!
- Pier 1 - Oh how I love me some Pier 1! It's my weakness! The only downside to shopping here is an obvious one, the expense. Luckily I have a special knack for justifying expensive purchases so Pier 1 has become my main hub for quality decorations.
- Justifying purchases at Pier 1 is actually easier than you'd think because you're essentially paying good money for quality products. I have holiday decorations going on 8+ years and they still look the same as the day I bought them! So if you're looking for decorations with longevity and can handle the slightly higher prices, then Pier 1 is for you. Plus if you wait long enough they too will have an after holiday sale which makes the remaining products much more reasonable!

- Use Whatcha Got:
- Okay so I know it's annoying to find a place to store all your fall and Halloween crap after the holidays, but ya know what else is annoying? Having to throw down a bunch of cash buying NEW fall and Halloween crap! So suck it up and store it!
- One of the great things about fall decorations is that the older they get, the better they fit in! We are living in the time of vintage everything, so unless something is SUPER broken, show some love to the oldies but goodies in your collection!
- Use whatcha got can also mean DIY stuff! Missoula is the land of falling leaves and home grown everything, so chop off the tops of a few pumpkins and gourds, gather up a few fall bouquets and give your home that fall feeling its been looking for!

- Treat Yo' Self:
- Lets be honest, it's unrealistic to think that you're never gonna cave and buy a bunch of decorations all at once for full price! Nobody has that kind of willpower. (I've tried and failed miserably at least 100 times) So instead, let yourself splurge on 1 item!
- Knowing in the back of your mind that you get to choose one item that is bigger and/or more expensive than the others will save you from impulse buying! For whatever reason, this knowledge will help talk you out of buying all the middle ground items (signs, stuffed animals, pillows, baskets etc.), at least until they go on super sale! Life is all about the little things, so if buying a decoration that is a little out of your price range makes you happy and you get to enjoy it for seasons to come, DO IT!
- If I didn't have my eye on a 5ft black light-up tree at Michaels, my Treat Yo' Self store of choice is almost always something from Pier 1!
