I am one of those people that always needs something to do, boredom is not a good thing for me.  While avoiding the feeling of being bored i have come across some excellent "time wasters" that will come in handy in any situation.
#1- Wasting time at work-
Equipment required: Computer w/ web access
Mental challenge: None
Frustration level: None

If you have one of those job that has a lot of down time, you'll find yourself at some point abusing the work computer to check your fantasy team's stats, look up dirty pictures, or cyber stalk that hot co-worker over Facebook.  After that check list is done, what next?  The best online boredom fixer I have found is stumbleupon.com.  You give the site a list of your interests and it shows you random websites you might like.  Sometimes it will give you something a little on the lame side, just hit stumble and it will take you to the next site.  I love it for the fact that I have found some really awesome sites that I probably would have never found in one of my random word Google searches.

#2- No computer but at least I have a smart phone-
Equipment required: Phone with application capabilities
Mental challenge: Mild
Frustration level: Moderate

This one is prime choice for when you are stuck in the back of that large lecture hall with a boring professor and have lost all interest in staring at the back of some dude's head.  I have just recently upgraded to a smart phone and am still finding out about all the new games and apps available.  I'm sure that everyone but me has already discovered this game but I have to say, between Trivial Droid and Angry Birds, I have not picked up my Nintendo DS in awhile.  I tried it on my friends phone thinking sling-shoting birds at helmet wearing swine is the dumbest thing I could do right now.  A couple levels in, I was hooked. I'm starting to think that I have a problem. Last night, I dreamed of green pigs... I don't know if that is due to Angry Birds or falling asleep listening to Green Jelly.

#3- Something so simple should not be this hard-
Equipment required:  pencil/pen, paper, patience
Mental challenge: Moderate
Frustration level: High

If you do not have internet access and your phone died from playing Angry Birds, there is this old brain teaser puzzle that I was offered $100 at one point to solve.  This dudes money is safe.  He swears there is a solution to the puzzle, but I swear it is impossible.  The only things that kept me trying were that it looks so simple, it was an easy way to kill time, and there was $100 bucks in it for me if I solved it.  What you do is draw five boxes together like in the picture, and try to draw one continuous snaking line through each line segment of the five boxes without missing a segment or crossing over it twice.  Confused yet?  Its alot simpler than it sounds except the actual solving of the problem.  As soon as you get it down, it has the same affect as South Park's Heroin Hero.  Almost got it, Almost got it, almost.....

#4- In retrospect-
Equipment required: Wall to bang head on
Mental challenge: Low
Frustration Level: Very High

Asking yourself "Why am I drawing rectangles and playing Angry Birds when I can just crack open a beer?" ...Needs no further explanation.
