If you’ve ever taken a road trip along Montana’s stretch of Interstate 90, you know just how wild the drive can get—especially in those twisty, turny spots. And let’s be honest, we’ve all had that moment where we think, “If I just steer a little too far…” Well, the Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) is working hard to make sure that moment never happens again.

Enter the new cable rail system. Designed to reduce the chances of a collision, these steel cables will line sections of I-90, serving as a protective barrier for drivers. It’s like adding a little extra cushion between your car and a potential disaster.

According to MDT officials, this new addition will not only protect us from accidents but also increase the overall safety of travelers who might be a little too focused on the view, or distracted by their favorite rock song (we’re all guilty of it). And with Montana’s unpredictable weather and winding roads, it’s a safety measure that could save lives.

As someone who has personally been involved in a collision on I-90, I can tell you that it is a very scary thing. My incident involved slipping on black ice and colliding with a guardrail. Looking back, it was the guardrail that kept me from rolling my vehicle down the road. Possibly saving me from serious injury.

So next time you’re cruising down I-90, know that those shiny new cables are there to keep you and your fellow travelers a little bit safer. And maybe, just maybe, they’ll take some of the edge off those tight corners.
