While not unexpected, more disappointing news was officially released today by the University of Montana.

The overall headcount enrollment at UM for spring semester is down 5.4 percent compared to spring semester, 2017. The total spring enrollment for 2018 is 10,987, 628 fewer students than a year ago. UM officials say they anticipated the numbers, which are traditionally lower than fall anyway, in part due to students who graduate midyear.

So, are there any bright spots? Well, the University of Montana Graduate School posted a 4.5 percent increase compared to a year ago. And the two-year Missoula College only lost 1.8 percent of students from a year ago, leaving them with a fairly healthy 1,580 students.

So, not a lot to cheer about, yet. And public opinion is such that if you ask 10 different people, you will get 10 different solutions. Is it bad reputation? Programs that don't appeal to high school seniors because perception is that there's not enough financial future in them? I'm sure the list goes on and on. But we remain in their corner, cheering them on with the hope that there are solutions and the promise of a bright future ahead.
