Incubus Working on New Music, But May Not Be Making an Album
Incubus fans have been enjoying the single "Into the Summer" recently even as the band has been revisiting the 20th anniversary of their Make Yourself album on tour. While Brandon Boyd recently revealed that the band has some new music in the works, bassist Ben Kenney clarified their status concerning what they're working on in a chat with Billboard.
"We have at least four songs that are completely done and at least one or two others that have videos already and a bunch of other ideas that are floating around that we might try to chip away at when we get back," the bassist explained.
He continued, "We're just gonna keep popping songs out if we can. We're just gonna figure out the way to get our music into people's hands over the next couple months and hopefully just keep grooving and touring."
Incubus have experimented with release strategy in recent years, most notably offering the 2015 Trust Fall (Side A) EP before going back to the album format with 2017's 8 album.
"We have our own studio now, and we love to record and explore and experiment. It's just a great situation," says the bassist, adding, "But we don't want to get stacked up in a studio making an album. We have to adapt our process 'cause the albums themselves don't actually make as big a splash as they used to."
Working in this manner does come with its benefits. "I think the key thing is we’re having fun and we're not really trying to chase any brass ring with it," says the bassist. "We're just trying to experiment and explore what we're capable of doing, and all the while not take ourselves too seriously and just really enjoy what we get to do."
Incubus are currently on tour with dates booked into December. See all of their dates listed here.
