Montana’s Greatest Band Has Finally Been Recognized Internationally

Montana has produced some incredible musicians over the years, and a few of them have gone on to become nationally known stars. One of the biggest names ever connected to Montana is Jeff Ament, bassist for the legendary band Pearl Jam. Another hugely successful Montana-born artist is Nicolette Larson, who remains one of the best-selling musicians ever to come out of Montana.

Stars of the Treasure State: From Names to Legacies

Over the years. Jimmy Buffett, Frank Zappa, and more have famously written about Montana. Huey Lewis, Hank Williams Jr., Jason Newstead, John Mayer, and Justin Timberlake have called Montana home. The list of artists with deep ties to the Treasure State continues to grow.

But when it comes to the greatest full band to ever come out of Montana itself, one international publication has made its choice, according to BBC Music Magazine, the band representing Montana as the state’s best is Mission Mountain Wood Band. 

For longtime Montanans, that choice probably makes perfect sense. 

A Nostalgic Journey: The Mission Mountain Wood Band's Impact

The Mission Mountain Wood Band, also known as M2WB, became legendary across Montana during the 1970s and 1980s, especially for their unforgettable live performances. They were a staple at Missoula's historic Aber Day keggers and played countless concerts across the state, often performing in smaller venues packed with loyal fans. Many people around Montana remember seeing them at fairs, festivals, bars, and outdoor events where the band frequently delivered high-energy shows. 

Celebrating Montana's Musical Heritage: Honorable Mentions

BBC Music Magazine also gives a nod to the Kitchen Dwellers and Silkworm. Silkworm recently reunited and is returning to Montana for a performance in Missoula.

While Montana may not produce musicians at the same rate as Nashville or Los Angeles, the state has still built a rich musical legacy over the years. And according to BBC Music Magazine, no band represents Montana better than the Mission Mountain Wood Band.
