Currently we are in the middle of winter in Montana. There is a lot more weather to come, and from what most forecasts are calling for, we can expect to see more snow and cold coming out way.

According to the National Weather Service, we are looking at a La Nina pattern of weather for the rest of winter, so we can expect to see above average precipitation and slightly below-average temperatures for this time of year. If the forecast holds that will mean there is still some epic skiing to be had before spring arrives.

This year marks the 11th anniversary that skier Landon Gardner and a couple skiing companions skied down Missoula's Mount Sentinel. It was a different time back then.

Landon Gardner, who hails from Missoula, competed for the U.S. Ski Team in freestyle moguls from 2004-2012. Gardner also continues to help coach the next generation of skiers for the Missoula Freestyle Team. He has also started another business, the Jewel Basin Yurt. Located just north of Flathead Lake, the yurt is available to rent throughout the year.

When I first learned to snowboard in Missoula almost 40 years ago, my friends and I would hike up the hills in Upper Miller Creek and snowboard down. When we were first learning, we didn't have the proper equipment. We took turns using the one snowboard available, and I wore imitation Sorel boots. Times sure have changed.

These days it doesn't seem like we get enough snow for someone to ski or board down Mount Sentinel, even if they wanted to. Either way, enjoy your time on the slopes, it looks like there is more skiing to be had this season. For a list of all the ski areas and resorts in Montana, keep scrolling.
