Camping in Montana can be one of the most magical things you can do. It can also be miserable. A lot of it depends on what you make of the experience. Please keep these things in mind when camping in Montana. They may just will help make it an enjoyable experience for all. First and foremost, obey all posted campground rules.

Be Aware Of People's Space- Campgrounds seem to be more and more crowded these days. Be aware that you are sharing the space with other people. Sometimes hundreds of other people. Don't walk through other people's campsites. Try to give other campers some space.

Not Everyone Wants To Hear Your Music- Playing music is not necessarily a bad thing, but there are limits. Playing your music loud enough for the entire campground to hear it and playing music late into the night is a nuisance. There are a lot of people who go into the woods specifically to get away from that. Not everyone can just close their camper door and have sound be muffled. When you sleep in a tent, you can hear everything, all night long. Most established campgrounds have "hosts" that can help control the noise level, but not always.

Leave No Trace- This can also be described as the rule of "pack it in, pack it out". It's a very simple concept. Don't let people know you were there. If you bring something into a campsite, take it out of the wilderness with you. Don't litter, don't leave garbage, realize there aren't people who will pick up after you. It's the wilderness, show respect to our state and the other campers.

Make Sure Your Campfire is Out- If you are camping in Montana, when campfires are allowed, never leave a fire unattended and make sure that the fire is completely out. The Forest Service has instructions on how to put out your campfire.

• Drown the campfire with water.
• Mix the embers and ashes with soil.
• Stir the embers and make sure they are wet.
• Feel the coals, embers, ashes and even the rocks or fire ring around the fire with your hands. They should all be cool to the touch.
• When you think you are done, wait a minute and add even more water.

If you follow these rules, camping should be an enjoyable and safe experience, not just for you, but for your fellow campers too.
