You never know when you'll run into someone famous here in Montana. That's one of the fun things about living in this state. You never know who you might meet or who you might find yourself sharing an experience with.

I've had that happen more than once over the years playing with a bagpipe band. We've performed for all kinds of people at events across Montana, but every once in a while, a gig comes along that turns into something truly special.

Honoring Heroes: The Smoke Jumper Reunion

Recently, our band was asked to play at a private gathering in Arlee, Montana. It was a reunion for smoke jumpers, including members of the rookie class of 1962 from the North Cascade Smokejumpers.

Courage and Tradition: The Role of Bagpipers

Bagpipers have a long tradition of honoring smoke jumpers, firefighters, police officers, and other first responders who put their lives on the line. When we were hired to perform for this group, we were more than happy to do it.

A Special Guest: The Legend of Béla Fleck

As we prepared for the gig, we were told there might be some other musicians performing throughout the evening. One name that immediately caught our attention was Béla Fleck.

If you're not familiar with him, Fleck is an extraordinary banjo player and musician who has won numerous Grammy Awards for his work. Needless to say, that got our attention. We weren't quite sure what to expect, but we knew we were in for something special.

The Musical Talent Unveiled: Featured Performers

When we arrived in Arlee, we discovered that this was going to be much more than an ordinary private gathering.

We had the honor of opening the evening for the smoke jumpers, playing our music for a group of people who had spent their careers doing incredibly dangerous work. Thankfully, they seemed to really enjoy our performance.

Then we discovered that Béla Fleck was indeed there, along with his wife, award-winning musician Abigail Washburn, and an incredible collection of other performers

Drew Jureucka, a violinist and composer, was there, along with Rose Morrison. John McDermott, a member of The Irish Tenors, also performed, as did guitarist Jason Fowler.

Nathaniel Pilatzke was there, too. The dancer has toured and performed with The Chieftains.

It was an amazing collection of talent, all coming together to entertain the smoke jumpers and celebrate their reunion.

Celebration of Community: Music, Dance, and Stories

After our performance, they enjoyed a catered dinner, and then the other musicians got out their instruments and gave a private show. There was music, dancing, and storytelling, and from what I heard, the entertainment continued well into the early morning hours.

Unfortunately, I couldn't stick around for all of it. I had to get up and go to work the next day, so I missed some of what turned out to be a pretty incredible evening.

Still, getting to be part of the gathering was an experience I'll never forget.

One of the things that really stood out to me was how appreciative everyone was of our pipe band. After all the years I've spent playing with the band and all the people we've entertained, it's always special when fellow musicians take the time to recognize and appreciate what we do.

An Unforgettable Experience: Music and Community

That meant a lot, especially when you consider the caliber of musicians who were there that night.

It was an honor to play for the smoke jumpers, and it was a thrill to be part of an evening that brought together so many talented performers. We went to Arlee to play our bagpipes and drums for a private reunion, and we ended up being part of something truly memorable.

I want to personally thank Bill Furman and the crew at the Thunder Road Farm in Arlee for hosting us.
