Proposal For Sightseeing Tram Near Glacier National Park Submitted
Some of the most spectacular scenery Montana has to offer my soon be accessible by way of a breathtaking birds-eye view.
THE GLACIER VIEW TRAM
The Flathead National Forest today announced the receipt of the special use authorization proposal from Pursuit Attractions and Hospitality to construct and operate the Glacier View Tram from Hungry Horse, MT up Columbia Mountain.
The aerial tramway would create a one-of-a-kind year-round sightseeing experience offering iconic views of Glacier National Park and the surrounding Flathead Valley.
Receipt of the proposal initiates a set of screening criteria whereby the Forest determines whether the proposal meets public need, and whether the proponent has financial and technical ability to operate the proposed development. If the proposal meets the screening criteria, then it is formally accepted by the Forest Service and an environmental analysis and public involvement is initiated as required under the National Environmental Policy Act, including the opportunity for public engagement.
WHAT THE FOREST SUPERVISOR HAS TO SAY
Forest Supervisor Anthony Botello was quoted in the announcement as saying, “Pursuit is an established and valued partner in providing recreation opportunities on the Flathead National Forest and Glacier National Park for many years, as well as across the country and internationally. A tram to the top of Columbia Mountain was proposed a few years ago and we heard a lot of valuable public feedback.
“If the proposal meets initial screening criteria, I am committed to working with public and Pursuit to evaluate this proposal and make an informed decision. I am looking forward to engaging with the community.”

PURSUIT'S VISION FOR THE PROJECT
The Glacier View Tram is being proposed as a year-round mountain sightseeing experience designed to connect people with the landscape, including visitors who cannot safely or practically reach higher elevations on foot. Consisting of two 100-passenger cabins, the tram would transport guests to a station just below the summit of Columbia Mountain, ascending more than 3,000 vertical feet in roughly six minutes. Accessible trails, walking paths, viewing areas and visitor facilities at both top and bottom stations would create new ways for visitors and residents to experience the surrounding landscape and take in iconic views of Glacier National Park, the Flathead Valley and Hungry Horse Reservoir.
David Barry, president and chief executive officer of Pursuit, was quoted in the company's announcement as saying, “We are excited to bring forward a proposal that would introduce a new and accessible way for visitors of all ages and abilities to enjoy the beautiful landscape of Glacier National Park and surrounding areas. With a long history operating in some of the world’s most iconic destinations, we understand that proposing a new experience on national forest land carries a responsibility to the land, wildlife and the people who live and work here. We look forward to supporting the Forest Service’s review process as they evaluate our proposal.”
