STUDY: Montana Is Among Worst States For Police

Before we get into the meat of this study, let me say we respect and love what our police officers do. Both the Missoula Police Department and the Montana Sheriff's Department deserve their praise.

Now, a new study conducted by the financial website WalletHub looked at the best and worst states. There were 30 "key metrics" analyzed. Some of the top factors were Law Enforcement Officers per capita, Law Enforcement Median Income, Violent Crime Rates and Percentage of Homicide Cases Solved.

"In order to determine the best states in which to pursue a law-enforcement career, WalletHub compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia across 30 key metrics. Our data set ranges from the median income for law-enforcement officers to police deaths per 1,000 officers to state and local spending on police," said WalletHub.

Montana ranks in the bottom 11

The Treasure State didn't rank higher than 31st in any of the individual categories. The highest ranking was under the Opportunity & Competition umbrella where we ranked 31st. The lowest ranking was 36th in Job Hazards & Protections.

Overall, Montana came in number 41 with an overall score of 36.66.

Best States To Be A Cop

Checking in number 1 was California with a score of 61.87. The rest of the top 5 looked like Illinois, Connecticut, the District of Columbia and Colorado.

Worst States To Be A Cop

Alaska was deemed the worst state in the nation to be a cop with a score of 26.80. The rest of the bottom 5 aligned like Hawai'i, Nevada, Arkansas and West Virginia.

No commentary coming from me except that I hope Montana law enforcement receives all the praise and compensation they deserve.
