Craigslist Rental Scam Alert for Missoula Residents
Missoula, MT (KGVO-AM News) - On May 18, 2026, the Missoula Police Department sent out a reminder to our community to stay vigilant when searching for rental properties online. Police Public Information Officer Whitney Bennett has the details.
“Officers took reports regarding a situation involving a fraudulent Craigslist rental listing,” Bennett said. “An individual, who was not the actual homeowner, posted a home for rent online and collected money from multiple people. Victims arrived expecting to move into the property, only to discover the home was already occupied and not actually available for rent.”
Bennett said the fraudulent Craigslist ad has since been flagged for removal, but scams like this continue to occur across the country.

Before sending money or signing anything for a rental property, consider the following safety tips:
- Be cautious of listings that seem significantly below market value
- Never send deposits or rent through wire transfer, gift cards, or payment apps to unknown individuals
- Verify ownership of the property through public records or trusted property management companies
- Ask to meet the landlord or property manager in person
- Be suspicious if someone claims they are “out of town” and cannot show the property
- Never rely solely on photos or online communication
- If possible, tour the property in person before providing payment

"Scammers often create urgency to pressure people into acting quickly," Bennett said. "Taking a few extra steps to verify a listing can help prevent financial loss and unnecessary stress. If you believe you may be the victim of a scam, contact local law enforcement and report the listing to the platform where it was posted."
