Downtown Missoula (DTM) is offering spaces on public buildings downtown to spruce and liven up the atmosphere of Zoo Town. It's made possible through the Foundation's Arts & Culture Impact Grants which, according to DTM's website, "aims to create connectivity to Downtown, capitalize on community assets, and create bonds among residents, visitors, and Downtown Missoula."

DTM Director of Giving Brandon Dewey discusses the excitement behind the project.

"It's an exciting opportunity for collaboration," expressed Dewey. "We as an organization collaborate on different things that improve downtown Missoula every day."

This specific project aims to make Missoula feel like Missoula by letting Missoulians express themselves.

"This one is unique in that you know, we're bringing an artist and their talent to a space that the public can enjoy, and that's something special because it embodies, you know, really what Missoula's all about." - Dewey

This project is part of a greater "Master Plan" to keep Missoula's appearance up, according to Dewey.

"The Master Plan is very broad," said Dewey.  "It lists a number of different initiatives and projects both things that are tangible as well as policy level type of things that outline 'how does downtown Missoula look over the 10 years.'"

Available spaces

There are two vacancies available to display your artistic talent downtown. The first is the back of Montgomery Distillery. The building is described as a "Full wall, including space around windows, garage and door available for use... Brick surface...Owner would like the mural to match the style of artwork seen within Montgomery Distillery."

The second is the south side of Worden's Market. The red/orange structure is described as a "Full wall, project can be phased in three sections... Painted cinder block surface... Owner would like to see a historical mural of Missoula through the years."

There are more options, however.

"This grant program isn't limited to just those two specific sites," explained Dewey. If someone has another space in downtown Missoula, whether it be on an alley or on a vacant wall or another public space that they want to help activate, we'll consider projects from those spaces as well."

The Grant provided will be allocated a total of 15 thousand dollars per year. That money is divided into 5 thousand dollars per project, so if you are interested in painting one of the fantastic Missoula businesses that's the kind of budget you'll be working with.
