On June 7, 2022, Missoula County Sheriff’s Office Deputies were dispatched to the Mill Creek and Purviance Way area for a report of a suspicious vehicle. The complainant reported there was a truck broken down with a local business’s utility trailer connected to it. The complainant, an employee of the business, reported this was suspicious as the truck pulling the trailer was not a company truck.

Law enforcement arrived on-scene and observed 27-year-old Joshua Webb walking around the truck. Webb stated he was fixing a wheel because the back passenger wheel came off the truck. Webb denied driving the truck and stated his friend was driving and he was a passenger.

Law enforcement observed that there was a toolbox on the floorboard in front of the passenger seat and that the back seat was completely full of tools and other miscellaneous items. Court documents indicate law enforcement determined it was unreasonable, if not impossible, that Webb could be sitting in the passenger seat based on the items observed in the vehicle.

A deputy asked Webb where the keys were located and Webb responded that his friend must have taken them with him when he left. Webb was detained for further theft investigation. During a pat down search of Webb, law enforcement located the vehicle’s keys in Webb’s back pocket. When confronted about this, Webb responded the keys must have fell into his pocket while he was under the truck changing the tire.

The local business was contacted regarding the status of the trailer and it was later confirmed that the trailer was in fact stolen. Law enforcement estimated the value of the trailer exceeds $10,000. A detective was also contacted regarding the truck as he has been dealing with theft reports in the Missoula County area. The detective confirmed that the truck belongs to a separate local business and was also reported stolen. Law enforcement estimated the value of the truck to be $4,500.

Webb was taken into custody and transported to the Missoula County Detention Center. He is currently being charged with two counts of felony theft.
