Missoula, MT (KGVO-AM News) - The Missoula County Attorney’s Office filed 16 new felony complaints this week, which is three more than last week and right around the weekly average. According to County Attorney Matt Jennings, there were four endangerment crimes.

“I usually breeze over that and mentioned that they're often related to driving, but this is a good time to remind people of how much drinking and driving impacts law enforcement and the work in our criminal justice system,” Jennings said. “We had a person that was going the wrong way on the Interstate intoxicated this week. We had a person in a high-speed chase with law enforcement. We had a person trying to ram a domestic partner with a car while believed to be under the influence.”

In addition, Jennings said there were two drug crimes this week. He said overdose deaths related to fentanyl are reducing quickly across the country.

“A lot of users are carrying around Narcan now, or they're getting a little bit more used to what their dose is,” Jennings said. “We're still seeing a lot of fentanyl in our community, but I've also anecdotally observed that I'm seeing fewer overdose deaths than a couple of years ago. That is good news. We enforce drug crimes because they lead to other crimes as well, but sometimes we also do it for a user's own protection and safety because we see the harm that it's causing to them and their families.”

Jennings also mentioned that they’ve been seeing a lot of kids being exposed to drugs.

“The legislature is deliberating a couple of bills that the Montana County Attorneys Association has put forward to allow us to strengthen some of our enforcement when kids are getting exposed to fentanyl, heroin, cocaine, and drugs like that,” Jennings said. “We welcome those opportunities and those tools. We do often hope in our system that we can clean up parents and that we can make them better parents so we can keep those kids safe. Eventually, the goal on a lot of that is working with Child Protective Services to rehabilitate those families, get everyone clean, and make sure those families are intact and safe.”
