Man Resists Arrest, Kicks Missoula Officer in the Face
Missoula, MT (KGVO-AM News) - On May 3, 2026, at approximately 7:51 p.m., Missoula Police Department Officers were dispatched to the Double Front restaurant located at 122 West Alder Street for a person, later positively identified as 40-year-old Carlos Keukelaar, to be removed. Missoula 911 dispatch relayed that a customer was refusing to leave the restaurant at the employee's request, and the customer was now demanding that the employees call law enforcement.
Officers arrived on scene from the opposite side of Alder and Railroad Street and observed Keukelaar in a chair alongside the table just inside the doorway at the base of the stairs. An officer informed Keukelaar repeatedly that he was ordered to leave and was being trespassed from the business. The male continued to argue with the officer and refused to comply with the command to leave the building.
Officers then advised Keukelaar that he would be arrested for Criminal Trespass and forced to leave if he did not do so on his own. Keukelaar continued to refuse commands and argued. Keukelaar then stood up to begin to argue with another patron, and another officer ordered him not to engage with the patron and that he needed to go outside or the officers would take him outside. Keukelaar responded, saying, “Why would you take me outside? I haven’t committed any crime?”

Physical Resistance and Arrest Attempts
As officers went hands on to escort Keukelaar out, Keukelaar raised his arms up and said not to touch him. Officers then reached for both of Keukelaar’s arms and advised Keukelaar that he was under arrest. As officers attempted to bring his arms and wrist to his back, Keukelaar began tensing his muscles in the forearm and bicep and used physical force to try to overcome the officers’ efforts to place him under arrest.
Keukelaar continued to verbally argue and physically resist efforts to arrest him. Keukelaar then began using an increasing amount of muscular force across his upper body, and then using his lower body to try to spin back into the bar area and break free of his control. It was apparent to officers that Keukelaar was willing to fight with them, and it was therefore important to quickly and effectively overcome his ability to fight and safely take him into custody.
Officers then coordinated and forced Keukelaar down to the floor to gain better control of him. Keukelaar continued using physical force to break officers’ grasps by twisting his body and shoving both officers. As officers continued their efforts on the ground, the male began to actively resist by twisting onto his back and grabbing at the officer’s vest and equipment.
Injuries Sustained During Arrest
Then Keukelaar lifted his legs and feet off the ground and used his right leg to strike an officer across the face. The officer then drew his Taser and delivered two probe deployments onto Keukelaar, both of which achieved an immediate result of muscular incapacitation. The officers repositioned themselves to gain better control and forced Keukelaar’s hands behind his back, where he was restrained in handcuffs.
After Keukelaar was in handcuffs, he again began yelling and fighting with officers’ attempts to detain him. By that time, other officers arrived on scene and attempted to reason with Keukelaar to cooperate. Keukelaar instead continued to repeat statements and refused to adhere to any requests.
All officers then worked together to place Keukelaar into a WRAP restraint device while keeping him as immobilized as possible. While this was happening, an officer realized that his left-hand index knuckle was bleeding from a sustained injury, and his lower lip began to tingle and swell from where he was struck by Keukelaar with the bottom of his shoe. A sergeant told the officer to proceed to the hospital to be evaluated for injury.

After being admitted for evaluation, the sergeant photographed the officer’s current conditions and injuries. During this evaluation, the officer noted that he discovered an injury in his left hand that was swollen, bleeding, and beginning to bruise. The sergeant observed redness on the left side of the officer’s face and noted that his bottom lip was reportedly tender. The sergeant documented the injury to the officer’s right elbow and his left shin, which were all photographed.
Keukelaar is currently being charged with felony assault on a peace officer, criminal trespass to property, disorderly conduct, and resisting arrest. His bond was set at $15,000.
