Missoula, MT (KGVO-AM News) - On November 13, 2022, Missoula Police Department officers responded to a business in the 2900 block of Brooks Street for a reported theft that had just occurred. When an officer arrived, they were informed that a male was in the Loss Prevention Office.

The officer was informed by an employee that the male was known to them for stealing store items in the past and they requested that he be trespassed. Police Public Information Officer Lydia Arnold picks up the story.

“Loss prevention recognized the male because the male had come in with a female two days prior and had stolen items,” Arnold said. “The male was with a female, Shawna Miller, at the time of the prior theft. Officers were shown the vehicle the male had arrived in. An officer located the vehicle and observed Miller sitting in the front passenger seat. Miller was a match to the female who was observed with the male in the prior theft.”

According to Arnold, the officer attempted to make contact with Miller, but Miller did not comply.

“The officer requested Miller step out of the vehicle, but Miller did not comply,” Arnold said. “Miller was asked to stand and a small baggie with a white crystalline substance fell on Miller’s seat. The officer advised Miller she was under arrest. Miller continued to physically resist the officer while being taken into custody. Miller was eventually taken into custody without further incident. The substance tested presumptive positive for methamphetamine.”

As the officer attempted to place Miller into handcuffs, court documents indicate Miller pulled away and verbally stated “no”. Miller was told to stop resisting, but she continued to try and break the officer’s grip and sat back down in the vehicle.

The officer repeatedly asked Miller to exit the vehicle and place her hands behind her back, but Miller refused to comply. The officer removed Miller from the vehicle, pulled her to the ground, and told her to get onto her stomach and place her hands behind her back.

Miller rolled onto her stomach, but tucked both of her hands underneath her body. The officer said they were only able to get Miller to comply after stating she would be tased if she did not put her hands behind her back.

Miller is currently being charged with felony criminal possession of dangerous drugs and misdemeanor theft. On November 15, 2022, at around 4:02 p.m., Miller was released from the Missoula County Detention Center.
