New Study Shows Montana Isn’t Leading The Moving Boom Anymore
Living in Montana, one of the most common conversations you hear about is people moving here. Transplants, newcomers, out of staters. Whatever term people want to use, the topic comes up a lot.

Well, there may be a little good news for those worried about the state topping every “people are moving here” list. A new report from HireAHelper looked at moving patterns across the country in 2025. The data shows Americans are still relocating, but the “why” people move is changing.
One of the biggest takeaways is that most people are not moving across the country anymore. Instead, they are simply relocating within their own state. The study found that about 78.49% of moves happened inside the same state. That adds up to more than 11.7 million moves in state, and a little over 3.2 million people moved across state lines.
Some states still saw major population gains. Texas added more than 68,000 residents, while South Carolina gained more than 41,000. Other southern states like Tennessee, North Carolina, and Alabama also saw a lot of newbies showing up.

Meanwhile, the biggest population losses came from California, followed by New York, Massachusetts, Illinois, and Maryland. Montana did not land anywhere near the top of the growth list. We gained about 23.4 adults per 10,000 residents. That is far less than what we have seen in the past.

Our neighbor, Idaho, however, is still seeing a strong wave of newcomers. According to the report, it added about 63.2 residents per 10,000 people. So if you know people over there, you might want to give them a mental wellness check.
