Minnow Races: The Kentucky Derby of the Bitterroot!
Buckle your seatbelts, racers! It’s time again for another fin-tastic event returning to the Bitterroot Valley. Tomorrow, Saturday, March 1st, is the date that the legendary Minnow Races return to the Lonesome Dove bar in Stevensville.
What Are Minnow Races?
Inspired by some of Montana’s famous ice fishing traditions, Minnow Races involve live minnows competing against one another to see who beats the rest to the finish line. Racetracks are 10-foot rain gutters filled with water. Participants choose their champion minnow, and then, using only a straw to blow bubbles, encourage their little swimmer to glory. It’s like the Kentucky Derby, but with more gills and fewer funny hats!

Even if you do not race, come and cheer on your fellow racers! Cameras broadcast the action to big-screen TVs hanging around the bar, so you won’t miss any of the aquatic excitement. And, of course, a 50/50 drawing and raffles with great prizes.
Why You Should Attend:
Face it: winter's a drag. But events like the Minnow Races give the community a chance for some much-needed fun and togetherness. Believe me when I say, as someone who has done the last few races, it’s a reel-y good time for everyone.
