Missoula Dogs Don’t Need a Leash if They Behave: True or False?
I don't know how to write this well enough to convey that I am speaking in a "baby talk" tone. So imagine it in your mind as you read the following and it will make more sense.
Do you have a good boi? You know? A good boyeeeee? A dog that could not harm a fly? A pet that is respectful and subordinate?
If so, do you think your dog can go into public without a leash? What harm is he going to do? The worst he can do is lick someone to death. Therefore he shouldn't need a leash. Right?
Missoula County Officials recently took to social media to dispel any myths about Missoula County. They were tackling the topic of the leash law in Missoula County.

Let's lay it out for you in words that are easy to understand:
CAN I HAVE MY DOG OFF LEASH IN MISSOULA IF HE IS WELL-BEHAVED?
Well...YES!.. And, NO?
- The City of Missoula leash ordinance requires all dogs in city limits to be on a leash.
- Some trailheads on city, county, and federal forest service land vary on leash requirements.
- Some popular hiking spots don't allow dogs at all
Even if a particular trailhead is lenient with leashing, they HIGHLY recommend everyone still does. It is simply safer for everyone—especially your pet.
Your "good boyeee" may be friendly. But other dogs can get grumpy. If another person has their dog leashed and your pup decides to give an unwelcome greeting, it could result in aggression. Not to mention the aggression they may encounter if you were to stumble upon a bear with cubs while on your hike.
Bottom line...It is wise to practice leashing your dog, regardless of where you go.
