The Wildest Montana Town Nicknames Are Going Viral
Montana towns have stories and legends and a few inside jokes. But don’t forget the nicknames. Some of them make sense. Others look as though someone lost a bet. And because of Montana creator Jonas Nichols, a whole lot of them are blowing up online.
Jonas went deep down a rabbit hole in searching for what people call their hometowns. Missoula is called Zoo Town, which we all know about. Helena gets Helltown, which sounds about right when you’re looking for a place to park. Whitefish is Stumptown. Bozeman is Bozangelous. And Great Falls gets G Funk, which is one of my favorites.
Other town names that Jonas found are not necessarily PG-13. Let’s just say Montana’s sense of humor has always had an element of dirty words. If you’d like the full tour of the nearly unprintable names (viewer discretion is advised), check out the full video.
How These Nicknames Even Happen
Most of them are from history. Logging towns. Mining towns. Train towns. Others are from residents who may have simply been bored on a Tuesday, as there is nothing else to do. One or two are from neighbors who like to stir the pot. That’s Montana. We roast the places we love. Except for Bozeman. They are basically a California suburb.
What’s so fun about Jonas’s video is that everyone has been chiming in with countless more names. People from the Canyon near Hungry Horse dam are called "Canyon Critters." Virtually every corner of the state has something to contribute. It’s a huge statewide roast battle, and I LOVE IT!
Your Turn, Montana
If you have a nickname for your town, share it in the comments. Keep it clean or don’t. Just know that someone, somewhere, is definitely using it. Let's hear it!
