More Firewood Opportunities on Bitterroot Forest
Some timber harvest slash piles have been opened for public firewood access on the Bitterroot National Forest. The Darby/Sula Ranger District opened portions of the Westside Timber Sale southwest of Hamilton on Observation Point and Moose Ridge roads #496, 5620 and 62953. Tod McKay of the Bitterroot National Forest said that slash piles along the Lost Horse Road are NOT included, due to future harvest plans. Get a USFS map to be sure.
You must have a valid firewood permit when you harvest the wood and the new areas are limited to existing piles only. No standing trees or marked trees can be cut in the harvest areas. You can purchase your permit at the Bitterroot National Forest offices during the weekdays at $5 per cord with a 4-cord minimum. If you need more information, check the Bitterroot Forest Facebook page.
