Ah, those pesky elk are in the way again!

Every winter, the city of Missoula closes off the South Zone of Mt. Jumbo to the public, because that's where a herd of about 80 elk spend their time during the season. Normally, those elk would have been moving by now, and the city would be able to reopen the mountain... but it looks like it's going to take a little bit longer.

Mt. Jumbo was scheduled to reopen today, March 15th - now, the city is delaying that opening by a week, giving the elk a little more time to make their way over to the North Zone, which is where they typically go. The new plan is to reopen the South Zone on March 22nd.

Of course, that's all dependent on if and when the elk actually decide to start moving, and that's very weather dependent - the warm weather we've had over the last couple of days will likely be a big help in getting them to where they need to be.

The L Trail on Mt. Jumbo is still open to use, but you won't be able to go any higher up the mountain once you reach the top. The good news is, Missoula is home to so many different hiking and walking trails, and with this awesome weather we're having this week, it's definitely worth taking advantage of and venturing out into the world a little bit. I saw this tweet earlier today and I thought, yep, that pretty much sums it up.
