Montana residents who try to report a scam to the state’s fraud hotline may be in for a big surprise if they find that hotline in their Dex CenturyLink phone book. The phone book which came out this April has an incorrect number that leads to what sounds like a phone-sex hotline where callers are asked to choose if they'd like to talk to a male or a female.

Of course, that’s not the real “fraud” hotline for the state of Montana’s Office of Consumer Protection, but calls to both the dex phone book company and to CenturyLink don’t lead to a solution either; neither company was aware of the real phone number and neither company appears to have the power to fix the problem. After calling both numbers in a process that took over an hour, KGVO news was referred to Mayfair Communications, which apparently owns the phone-sex hotline number.

Eric Sell from the Montana Department of Justice, says the number used by the phone book company appears to be an old number used by the Montana Department of Labor to report worker's compensation fraud, but that the number has been re-routed.

The correct number to the Office of Consumer Protection is actually 1-800-481-6896 and can be found easily online at the Montana Department of Justice website. KGVO News found out about the number discrepancy because of an older Missoula resident who did not have internet access and tried to report a phone scam using the phone book.
