Museum of the Rockies Exhibit “Apsáalooke Women and Warriors”
Saturday, May 28, a new exhibit will open to the public at Bozeman's premiere museum - Museum of the Rockies. "Apsaalooke Women and Warriors" will have special gallery presentations from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. At 11 a.m.
The exhibit centers on the Apsaalooke, also known as the Crow culture, through the years, including their art. The collection comes from Chicago's Field Museum. A special panel will convene in the Hager Auditorium with the topic "Intellectual Traditions: Crow Conversations in Land, Culture and Art." The exhibit will be at home in Bozeman until the end of the year.
The exhibit is especially important to Montana because the Crow people are based in the south-central part of the state. The wide-ranging displays explore the art, the matriarchal traditions, the horsemanship, and the tradition of "Counting Coup" - performing acts of bravery. Curator Nina Sanders and the Apsaalooke community collected many items, including war shields, 20 works of art and a 9-foot-tall modern tipi reproduction.
Museum members can get an early look Friday at 5:30 p.m. Admission is free for members and children age 5 and under. Regular museum admission prices range from $10.50 to $16.50.
Near the museum, at the Montana State University Track and Field Complex, south of Bobcat Stadium, another event is planned. The Apsaalooke Social and Push Dance will start at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. It's free and the public is invited.
Planetarium summer program schedule starts Saturday, too
The museum's Taylor Planetarium starts its summer program schedule Saturday, too. The shows project on the 40-foot dome and can seat 85 people at a time in the special reclining seats.
The hourly shows for the next three months include a kids' program "The Little Star That Could," along with "Montana Skies" to help you explore our night stars, "Big Astronomy" which takes you to three observatories along the Andes Mountains of Chile, and a program called "Supervolcanoes." The programs rotate hourly through the day with start times 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The shows are included with your museum admission and seating is first-come, first-served. Doors open 10 minutes before the scheduled start time. If you need more information on the museum, check the Museum of the Rockies website.
