Montana Households Advised to Toss These Soap Brands
Hey, if you have a bottle of DermaRite soap on the sink, now could be the time to turn it around and check out the label. Spread the word. The FDA announced a nationwide recall for bacterial contamination that can trigger sepsis.
For healthy people, this bug may only give you a little rash. However, if your immune system is weak, it can escalate to a serious level of organ failure pretty quickly.
What’s Being Pulled From Shelves
The recall covers the DermaRite products listed below:
- DermaKleen antiseptic lotion soap w/Vitamin E
- DermaSarra external anti-itch lotion
- KleenFoam with Aloe Vera antimicrobial foam soap
- PeriGiene antiseptic perineal cleanser
Some have been sold in all 50 states, and some went to hospital patients or residents of nursing homes, while others were bought at retail locations like Walmart and Target.
What’s the Risk?
The culprit is the bacteria Burkholderia cepacia. Unless you get it from the ground or out of a body of water, it has no excuse for being in your soap. It’s notoriously hard to treat and can also lead to deadly infections in vulnerable people.
There are no reports of illnesses right now, which is exactly why the FDA doesn’t want to wait for that to change.
What To Do If You’ve Got It
Here’s the deal:
- Stop using it immediately.
- Just throw it away! Do not try to “use it up.”
- If you’ve been using it and feel unwell: fever, chills, unusual skin issues (see your doctor.)
- Let the FDA know through the MedWatch program.
