Oh, the fond memories I have about "Jaker's" in Missoula. I dated a waitress for a few months and ate there almost every day. I became an expert at finishing a bowl of baked potato soup without using a spoon and only using their famous scones. (That is a talent that I am proud of by the way.)

With Jaker's now gone, the question has been swirling about what was going to take over the former Jaker's location. Missoula recently received the announcement that a new Mexican eatery will be opening on Brooks Street.

According to manager Andres Olivares and his interview with NBC Montana

We're excited to bring Plaza Azteca to Missoula. We have big plans to remodel the former Jakers building to create a warm and inviting atmosphere. While we're keeping some details under wraps for now, our focus is on delivering an authentic and memorable dining experience to the community. We look forward to sharing more as we get closer to opening.

Missoula has a good amount of options for Mexican cuisine. With similar choices located within a short distance of the old Jaker's location. How will Plaza Azteca compete?

The food will be the biggest player in the game.

  • Does it taste better than the competition?
  • Is it authentic Mexican recipes?
  • SALSA? CHIPS?

No word on when Plaza Azteca will open its doors.

If we are going to have another Mexican food restaurant in town, it has got to stand out above the rest. Since they are keeping the details under wraps, I am hoping for a dining experience much like the Casa Bonita restaurant in Colorado. Known as the Disneyland of Mexican restaurants.

I know we can't fit a waterfall in the old Jaker's location. But it is just wishful thinking.
