27 year-old Dantaye Northcutt is in the Missoula County Jail on $25,000 bond for allegedly punching a woman several times and stealing a backpack that was suspected of containing methamphetamine.

At Northcutt’s Missoula Justice Court appearance on Thursday afternoon, Deputy Prosecutor Mark Handelman asked Judge Landee Holloway for $25,000 bail.

“In front of Bonner School, the defendant punched his girlfriend several times,” Handelman began. “He then grabbed her backpack, pushed her down and threatened to kill her if she told the cops his name. Another witness observed what happened and called 9-1-1. The defendant wanted the backpack because it likely contained illicit substances, and when the police contacted the defendant, he appeared to be under the influence of methamphetamine.”

Handelman relayed Northcutt’s criminal history to the judge.

“His criminal history has a previous PFMA, assault, disorderly conduct, assault on a peace officer, criminal possession of dangerous drugs, warrants for failure to appear as well as numerous traffic offenses.”

Northcutt's charges include felony theft, felony probation violation and second offense partner or family member assault, a misdemeanor.

When asked by Judge Holloway, Northcutt said he had no phone, no fixed mailing address and no job.

Judge Holloway set bail at $25,000 and ordered Northcutt to appear in court again on August 16.
