Online Petition Wants to Sell Montana to Canada For $1 Trillion
So turns out, you could wake up tomorrow and suddenly be a Canadian citizen.
At least, that's if the people behind this Change.org petition get their way: they're collecting online signatures to get the US government to sell the Big Sky state to Canada, to the tune of $1 trillion. The idea is that this would solve the national debt crisis.
Now, ignoring the fact that the US, as far as we know, has no intention of selling Montana; ignoring the fact that Canada has never expressed an interest in spending a trillion dollars to buy Montana; and ignoring the fact that the national debt is actually hovering at around $22 trillion, meaning this sale would be basically pointless - the question is, would you sign the petition?
A couple of people from Montana in the comments section actually seem in favor of the petition, which states its reasoning simply by saying: "We have too much debt and Montana is useless. Just tell them it has beavers or something."
As of this writing, the petition has over a thousand signatures and the number is climbing. So, who's ready to start adding poutine to their diet?
