Search and Rescue Assist in Bringing Snowmobiler to Safety

Missoula County Search and Rescue crews were called out on Sunday after a snowmobiler encountered trouble in the 9 Mile area.

Missoula County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Brenda Bassett provided details of the successful effort.

“Yesterday (Sunday) at about 11:30 a.m. dispatch received a call that there was an individual in the 9-Mile area that was experiencing some medical issues,” said Bassett. “At that time one of our coordinators in our office starting talking with Search and Rescue, and that’s when the members decided to go up as a proactive move because the temperatures were pretty cold.”

Bassett said the individual was able to get to safety.

“The driver was eventually able to get out with the group of snowmobilers that he was with, and then he was transported to a local hospital,” she said. “I don’t know his specific condition, but we were glad that he was able to reach that ambulance and get the attention that he needed.”

Bassett said the incident was an important reminder for those recreating outdoors to be prepared for any emergency.

“Whether it’s hunting or snowmobiling you should always have someone to go out with,” she said. “If you’re going alone, at the very least let someone know where you’re going and what time you expect to return home so that searchers have a place to start their efforts for a successful rescue.”

As in a recent snowmobile rescue near Seeley Lake, having materials necessary to start a fire is essential when recreating in the winter.
