When it comes to Montana, Hollywood seems to have one thing in mind: endless blue skies, majestic mountains, and a rancher who looks good brooding against a sunset. But for those of us who actually live here, Hollywood’s obsession can feel a little… invasive. Enter "Somewhere in Montana," a drama set to premiere in January 2025, that shines a spotlight on what happens when Tinseltown barges into Big Sky Country.

Starring Graham McTavish (Outlander, The Hobbit) as John Alexander, the film tells the story of a cash-strapped cattle rancher who reluctantly allows a Hollywood film crew to take over his property. While the movie is a heartfelt exploration of resilience and rural life, the storyline hits a little close to home for Montanans. It’s basically art imitating life...Except in this case, the cameras don’t pack up when the credits roll.

In real life, Montana has become a darling of the film industry, with productions spending a staggering $334 million here over the past two years. Sure, that’s great for the economy, but let’s not forget the downsides. Traffic jams on rural roads, film crews treating ranchers like unpaid extras, and a surge of “influencers” trying to post selfies with cows.

And while Hollywood might think Montana is the perfect canvas for its dramas, the feeling isn’t always mutual. Locals are raising questions about how much of Montana’s values we’re willing to sacrifice for the spotlight. The irony? A film like "Somewhere in Montana" highlights these very tensions...while being part of the problem.

Because here in Montana, we don’t just live the drama. We endure the aftermath when Hollywood packs up and leaves us to clean up their mess.

The movie is due in Theaters on January 10th.
