It's always a good idea to know which mushroom is safe to eat - especially if you're gathering them from the woods around Montana and Idaho. Stevensville's North Valley Public Library will have a Beginners Class on mushroom identification Thursday at 6 p.m.

Larry Evans of the Western Montana Mycological Association will tell you how to identify the edible mushrooms and how they help out the environment. The hour-long session is free at the community room of the library at 208 Main Street in Stevensville.

By the way, the nearby Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests are now offering free personal mushroom permits. Each permit allows a harvest of up to five gallons of mushrooms a day - up to 20 gallons for the season. These permits are only good on that Idaho forest and when you collect them, you MUST cut them in half. You can find more information at their website.
