The wonderful annual opportunity for Montana youth to hunt before the grownups get their chance is coming up next week.

But obviously, adults have to be involved and there are some important guidelines that accompany that adult supervision.

The two-day youth deer hunt is Thursday and Friday, October 17-18. It coincides with the annual Montana Educators Association Conference, so the kiddos get a break from school those days.

The youth hunt is open to legally licensed 12-15 year olds who have completed hunter education and who are accompanied by a non-hunting adult at least 18 years of age. Also eligible are properly certified and and legally licensed hunters 10-15 years of age who are accompanied by a non-hunting adult "mentor" at least 21 years of age.

Remember, this hunt is for deer only. Elk hunting is not permitted. All Montana hunting regulations apply.

We wish all the kids the best of luck. We know it will be the thrill of a first harvest for many of them.
