Watch Prophets of Rage Perform + Protest Outside the Republican National Convention
"Clear the way for the Prophets of Rage!" The group formed from members of Rage Against the Machine, Public Enemy and Cypress Hill promised they would be "rocking furiously in and around the Republican National Convention" and came through on their word. Prophets of Rage took to the streets in Cleveland, Ohio, for a series of performances, one of which did not even feature instruments, and staged an "End Poverty Now" march.
The band took the stage on the streets of Cleveland and performed a 35-minute set (video above), opening with the original cut, "The Party's Over." Prophets of Rage tore into Rage Against the Machine classics like "Guerrilla Radio," "Sleep Now in the Fire" and "Bulls on Parade." Before closing the set with "Killing in the Name," guitarist Tom Morello thanked everyone for "coming out today with your joy and your militancy" and stated that the band would be starting the "End Poverty Now" march, imploring everyone in the crowd to follow them to "let those motherf--kers at the RNC know that we’ve had enough of their bulls--t!"
Giving some history behind the next song, Morello continued, "This song in particular was used by the Bush administration to torture prisoners in Guantanamo Bay and in black sites overseas. This is our revenge, we’re now going to use this song to torture those sons of b--ches at the RNC, with your help!" Video of the march can be seen directly below.
Prophets of Rage released their eponymous song yesterday (July 18), which was a newly recorded version of the Public Enemy classic, "Prophets of Rage, with a new spin on the track. The band will perform tonight at the Agora Ballroom, just over two miles out from the Republic National Convention.
