What Will be Different About UM Griz Football Uniforms Saturday?
When you think of throwback uniforms for the Montana Grizzly football team, many longtime fans associate that with the days of copper jerseys and gold helmets.
Well, we're not throwing back quite that far this Saturday, October 16, Griz fans. In fact in some cases, if you didn't know, you might not notice. But there are some changes being made to the Montana uniforms on Saturday, as part of a tribute to one of the best teams in school history.
Twenty years ago, the Montana Grizzlies, led by an unrelenting defense and a multi-faceted offensive attack, returned to Chattanooga TN and capped an amazing season with a 13-6 win over Furman to claim the school's second national championship.
Now, to celebrate their 20th anniversary, the 2001 National Champion Grizzlies are once again coming together to celebrate that legacy and to put in another total team effort that will impact the lives and careers of future Grizzlies for generations to come. Led by former head coach Joe Glenn, the 2001 Griz make their triumphant return to Missoula for a team reunion this Friday, October 15, and an on-field celebration the following day when Montana hosts Sacramento State in Washington-Grizzly Stadium.
The reunion is not just for show. 2001 team fundraising efforts have been underway to raise enough to benefit the program for years to come. With the money they are raising, the team will endow a scholarship in memory of three players from that squad, Tim Bush, Curt Colter, and Herb Fernandez, that the world lost too soon. They will also support the ongoing facility improvements for Grizzly Athletics and the football program.
Now, back to the throwback uniforms. The current edition of the Montana Grizzlies will be wearing 2001 maroon and silver attire. Some of the changes you might notice include MONTANA being much smaller across the front of the jersey, a little less striping on the shoulder pads and pants and grizzly bear claws on the sleeves.
What we hope doesn't change is the results of the game. The 2001 national champion Griz buried Sacramento State 42-7 on October 6, 2001.
