I didn’t believe it when I saw it. But there is a collegiate Baseball team in Kansas with a very unique name. They are well known for being a championship team. In the last 50 years this member of the Jayhawk Conference under the National Baseball Congress has won 13 Conference titles and 5 nationals. But, for Baseball being a very “family friendly sport”, they have a very strange name.

Hailing from Liberal, Kansas. The Liberal Bee Jays have been smacking balls out of the park decades. Even with a name that may make you giggle a little every time you hear it. Ian Kinsler, from the Texas Rangers, even played for the Bee Jays.

So while you are watching the all-American game of baseball this year. Keep in mind that, no matter how much your team “sucks”, at least they don’t have a “sucky” name.

The Black Stone Cherry show is sneaking up on us. If you haven’t gotten your tickets yet, they are available at The Lucky Strike and online. BSC is known for their single “White Trash Millionaire.” And, according to the song, it seems like a WT guy would have a lot of fun with all that dough. But a British Lottery winner, Michael Carroll, takes it a little too far.

After winning a huge jackpot, Mikey did as you would expect from a white trash dude. HE PARTIED! AND PARTIED! AND PARTIED! Maybe a little too much. He blew a big chunk of his money on a mansion. Then he turned the back yard into a demolition derby track. He thrashed the mansion in very little time.

I got to be honest though. I probably would party my ass off and do a lot of the same things. But I would set aside a little money for an army of cleaning ladies to clean while I fight the hangovers.

Actually Les Claypool to be accurate, “Under the Influence: A Jam Band Tribute to Lynyrd Skynyrd” also includes a jam by The Disco Biscuits, I mean how can you NOT own this album.

Ok, so I’m the only person who bought this album. But there are a bunch of killer Skynyrd tribute albums and tracks, check out some of this goodness.

Rock bands encounter lots of bizarre things while traveling around in the trusty old van, but what Here We Go Magic crossed paths with Wednesday afternoon was truly shocking. Or, more precisely, who they crossed paths with.

While driving through Ohio, the Brooklyn-based band picked up a hitchhiker that should be more than a little familiar to fans of campy B-movies like ‘Pink Flamingos,’ ‘Hairspray’ and ‘Cecil B. Demented’ — because the hitchhiker was none other than the director of those films, John Waters.

The band documented the run-in with a series of tweets, starting with the pick up and then moving from there all the way through Waters buying them lunch and parting ways.

“Just picked up John Waters hitchhiking in the middle of Ohio.. No joke. Waters in the van,” the band tweeted.

“What an utter gentleman, as natural and observant of people as one might imagine. A total joy, full of stories. Thanks JW, be safe out there,” they added later.

Guitarist Michael Bloch later described the situation to Gothamist, saying that they saw Waters holding up a hitchhiking sign at the side of an on-ramp, but didn’t recognize who it was until they drove past him. They turned around at the next exit and swung back by, hoping to run into him again. Bloch continued: “He was still there. We pulled up, opened the door and asked where he was coming from. ‘Baltimore,’ he said. And we said ‘Get in, sir.’ ”

We found John Waters hitchhiking on the side of the 70 fwy, he bought us lunch.
If you know a kid who insists on wearing his sisters jeans and constantly has his hair in his face. Give him a pair of scissors. Because even though he feels “the world doesn’t get me so I punch myself in the “junk” to feel pain.” You are doing him a favor in the long run by finally convincing him to cut his hair. Let him know that, in a recent study, doctors have discovered that “Emo Hair Styles” could lead to that person developing a lazy eye.

According to Optometrist Andrew Hogan and NME.com : “If a young emo chap has a fringe covering one eye all the time, that eye won’t see a lot of detail. And if it happens from a young age, that eye can become amblyotic.”

Amblyotic is a fancy way of saying lazy eye. But some Doctors say that Hogan is wrong. It could eventually form a lazy eye, but only if the kid was born with the emo haircut. I guess that explains why Gerard Way, from MCR, always seems to be looking at the corner of the room.

Skrillex has certainly won over the Grammy committee, club DJs, the record-buying public and even a few moms with his dance music called dubstep, but what do the kids think of him? And when we say “the kids,” we don’t mean the trend-savvy adolescent youth of America — we mean actual adorable little children.

To find out, the people behind Vice enlisted a gaggle of cute little kids to take part in a listening party for an episode of their online video feature called Noisey. In the clip, the kids voice their opinion of the DJ’s hot hit single ‘Bangarang.’

Oh, did we mention they gathered the kids in a London dance club, dressed them up like little ravers and loaded them up with the good stuff (candy!)? The children are decked to the nines in club gear, from brightly colored wigs and necklaces to baggy pants and plastic thick-rimmed glasses. In between turns busting moves on the disco floor, the kids sit down on a couch, throw on headphones to listen to ‘Bangarang’ and let the comments fly.

The verdict? It’s hard to get a precise read on if they liked it from their comments — though they certainly seemed to have a blast cutting a rug on the multicolored light-up disco floor — so let’s just sample some of the comments.

“What is dubstep?” asks one girl in baggy overalls, perhaps voicing a question millions have thought to themselves but were afraid to ask.

“This music makes me want to slap my sister’s fat butt,” says one little girl, decked out in a Dayglo orange wig, a string of brightly colored beads around her neck.

“It makes me want to run around and dance,” adds a girl in a purple top.

“The song makes me feel crazy, like I’ve eaten loads of sweet,” a little redheaded boy wearing a rainbow tie-dye T-shirt chimes in a bit later.

“His hair looks like a girl and his face like a boy,” adds another redheaded boy, after seeing a picture of the DJ. “And that’s so funny.”

So funny, indeed.

New York got a treat over the weekend as Fear Factory played a packed show this past Sunday, May 13, at Gramercy Theater with special guests Shadows Fall, as well as the Browning, Legacy of Disorder and the Devastated, as part of the ‘Noise in the Machine Tour.’

Fans got to see Fear Factory’s Burton C. Bell and Dino Cazares together onstage rocking out and the crowd went insane as they opened up with ‘Shock.’ They also played ‘Recharger’ a new tune off of their upcoming record ‘The Industrialist.’

The vigor that Bell, Cazares and bassist Matt DeVries brought was infectious as their fans sang word for word to every song and got some serious mosh pits going. Fear Factory also played ‘Resurrection,’ Edgecrusher’ and ‘Linchpin,’ among many other tunes, and ended their set with ‘Replica.’

Shadows Fall also tore the roof off of Gramercy Theater as the dread-y goodness of Brian Fair got the blood pumping. They kicked off their set with ‘Thoughts Without Words’ and ‘Still I Rise.’

In support of their latest album, ‘Fire From the Sky,’ the band performed new songs such as the title track, ‘The Unknown’ and ‘Divide and Conquer.’ Fair’s stage presence and energy as well as the length of his dreads were out of this world. The band’s chemistry onstage along with Fair’s ability to get right in fans faces and look them right in the eyes was also incredible to see.

The Browning delivered a unique set, as they featured an overwhelming bundle of vivacity in their performance. Their music was as distinctive as they are as they mixed heavy metal with electronic which called for intense synthesizer action and had a dub-step-y vibe.

The New Zealanders of Legacy of Disorder won over these East Coast fans as they played a passionate and forceful set. As frontman James Robinson bellowed out the songs, the band’s brotherhood and sincerity onstage were evident.

The West Coasters of the Devastated kicked off the night of great performances and quality metal with a excellent set of their own. Despite the a small crowd at the venue during their set, their energy never weakened.

Korn’s latest album ‘The Path of Totality’ saw the band going in a new musical direction, embracing dubstep and utilizing several different producers including Skrillex. We caught up with drummer Ray Luzier backstage before their set at the Carolina Rebellion Festival. That was the show that featured the surprise return of Brian ‘Head’ Welch for one song, the first time he performed with the band since 2005.

We talked about the latest CD and the album of the year award at the Revolver Golden Gods. And since Luzier used to play with David Lee Roth, Van Halen’s newest release was discussed along with the future of the supergroup Army of Anyone and other topics.

What inspired the musical direction you took on ‘The Path of Totality’?

Korn has always had an element of hip-hop, reggae, funk. It’s an extreme direction, but to me it’s a Korn record at the end of the day. Jon [Davis], for the last several years, has been into dubstep music. He turned us onto Skrillex first, and said he was going to write some words on top of one of these songs. I didn’t know if it was going to be a solo project or what it was going to be. He said, “No, I want this to be the new Korn record.” That’s basically what happened. We thought maybe we would just make a five song EP. That was the plan, but it spread like wildfire. It was cool.

How did your part of the recording process work?

Jon would meet with most of the producers first, but a lot of the time the drums were the last things laid down. It’s usually the opposite. The drums are normally the first thing laid down and everything else goes on top of it. On our last record ‘Korn III’ we took time off the road and did it organically in a room, old school. We just sat in a room and wrote a song and recorded it 45 minutes later. On this album, Jon would do a vocal in Seoul, Korea. I would do a drum track in Honolulu, Hawaii.

It was a really different process for me, because I’m all about the song. If it calls for a lot of wacky fills or beats I’m all for it. But these songs are so heavy and powerful. The samples that dubstep people use are so massive, I found myself doing extra stuff, and it would ruin the beat and ruin the song. So I ended up playing really simplistic on this record. And live I wanted to make sure I played everything organically, meaning I played every note. We play our set in thirds. The second set is all dubstep, so I switch out my acoustic snare with an electric snare. We had Viggy, Tommy Lee’s guy, program everything. He did it so when I hit the snare, it’s the verse, and it will change automatically to the chorus snare. So that’s how we do it. I play every note live.

How did the actual fan reaction to the direction of the new album compare to what your expectations were of their reaction?

You’re always going to piss somebody off. You can’t make everyone happy. On the last record we went old school and brought Ross Robinson back (who produced Korn’s first two albums), and some people said, “Come on, it’s the same old thing!” For this one we went extreme. A lot of fans came up to us at the beginning of the tour and said they were still trying to digest it. Now they have seen it a couple of times, and most of them tell us they love it. I’m also getting emails from 16-year-old Skrillex fans who had never heard of Korn, but bought the record because he (Skrillex) was on it. So we’re turning new fans onto it.

You’ve even made the Billboard dance charts with this one.

It’s crazy. We’re still No. 5 in Europe. We won album of the year from Revolver. It’s kind of nuts to go off into left field like that. You don’t know what fans are going to say. Korn fans are so die-hard.

You were in Los Angeles to accept the Revolver Golden God award for best album…

Yes. Me and Fieldy showed up to accept it, but he was with his daughters and ended up leaving early. So I had to accept it by myself. I’ve been in the band for five years, but haven’t been in the band for 19 years like some of the guys. There were a couple of Ray fans there, but most of them were probably looking behind me, wondering where the guy with the dreads was. (laughs) It was an honor. We were nominated for a Grammy for ‘Korn III,’ and then the album of the year for ‘The Path of Totality.’ It doesn’t suck being in this band right now, that’s for sure.

Is there any place you still want to get to and play live?

It’s funny you ask that, because we just added India in August, and I’ve always wanted to go to India. That will be cool. I think it’s the first time there for Korn, too. With my previous bands I never got to go to nearly as many places as Korn has. My first tour was South Africa, Dubai, crazy places I never thought I would end up.

When you have some extra time on the road, do you make an effort to see the local sights?

I do, I like to get out. Sometimes I’m a hermit in my hotel room. This band travels nicely, which is good. We stay in nice hotels. All the years when I was with David Lee Roth we ventured out so much and saw a lot of places in the United States and Europe. I love the culture of Europe and venture out. But stateside I’m sometimes a hermit.

What do you think of Van Halen’s comeback album ‘A Different Kind 0f Truth’?

I didn’t like it at first, but now I love it. You look forward to that next record coming out from your favorite bands. It’s been a while since I’ve had the feeling of a new Van Halen record in my hand. But it’s funny to me, because when I was in (David Lee Roth’s) band he showed me four or five songs from the new record. ‘She’s The Woman,’ ‘Tattoo’ and all those songs I heard 10 years ago. It was a trip when I heard ‘Tattoo’ on the radio, because I remember hearing it at Dave’s house. I had a grin on my face when I heard these songs now.

You recorded an album in 2006 with Army of Anyone (which also included Richard Patrick from Filter, and Robert and Dean DeLeo from Stone Temple Pilots). There have been conflicting reports whether there will be another album. What can you tell us about that band?

It’s possible. We are all really good friends. We have a bunch of tunes in the works. I think if the time ever arose where we all could make our schedules fit, it would work out.

Adam Yauch from the Beastie Boys just passed away. Did you ever cross paths with him?

I met the Beastie Boys when I was with David Lee Roth. They are huge Van Halen fans. They came out to New York City one time for a show and I had the pleasure of meeting him. He was a real sweetheart of a guy. It’s such a shame. He was only 47.

The younger sister of Michael Jackson turns 46 today. Before becoming one of the biggest music stars in the world, Janet was an actress with roles on T-V’s Diff’rent Strokes (and now I’ve got THAT theme song in my head), Good Times and Fame. She later starred in such movies as Poetic Justice and Nutty Professor Two: The Klumps. Of course she’s also remembered for her 2004 controversial “wardrobe malfunction” with Justin Timberlake during the Super Bowl halftime show.

Also known as my favorite Janet Jackson moment ever.

I’ll never forget that day. We were having our annual Super Bowl throw down at my place when the halftime show began. Like the rest of America, everybody jumped up from the sofa and headed to the kitchen for shots. But not even the sweet sound of booze bottles being cracked open in my kitchen could drag me away from the television. So there I was, all alone, watching Janet & Timberlake on mute, when all of a sudden it was clear that Santa had received my Christmas letter. Janet’s amazing tata broke free and exposed itself, causing the most rewound television moment in history.

The moment I’ve been waiting for since this poster came out.

You can buy this poster at www.amazon.com

Let’s go ahead and relive that amazing Super Bowl moment now.

After suffering through subfreezing temperatures all winter, it might sound silly to complain about hot weather. But just as “it’s too cold” is a common excuse to scrimp on exercise during the winter months, “it’s too hot” is a go-to reason to forgo a workout during the few months that it is actually warm in Montana.

Discomfort, of course, is part of getting — and staying — in shape. But some people don’t handle the heat as well as others.

To those who cringe at the thought of slogging down the road in a sweat-drenched T-shirt, I offer the following advice: make it fun.

“Fun? What could possibly be fun about sweating so much that my eyes burn from the saltiness of my own perspiration?” you might ask.

Well, obviously running/walking/jogging in the heat is not inherently fun. To make it fun, you have to add an element of challenge. Here a few of my favorite hot-weather running “games”:

1. The Shade Game: As you might have guessed from the title, this game involves running in the shade. Instead of setting a route before I head out, I head in the direction of the first patch of shade I spot. From there, I chase down another patch of shade, then another, and so on. This strategy keeps the course interesting and unpredictable while giving my body a break from the draining effect of direct sunlight. The residential streets surrounding the University of Montana campus are great for the Shade Game, as there is an abundance of tall, leafy trees.

2. The Sprinkler Game: This game is very similar to the Shade Game. As you run down the street, keep an eye out for lawns and gardens with active sprinklers. When you spot one, head toward it — no matter how far out of the way it is. After running through it, challenge yourself to find another one before the water lingering on your skin and clothing has dried. Not only will the sprinklers help you stay cool and refreshed, but also you will get in some good speed work as you hustle from spout to spout.

3. The Otter Pop Game: This isn’t so much a game as it is a reward system. Go to the grocery store and buy a box of your favorite frozen treats, but resolve to only let yourself have one at the end of a sweaty workout. I can tell you from experience that Otter Pops taste much better at the end of a long, hot run. In fact, I find the taste to be disappointing in all other contexts — which, in a twisted sort of way, serves as further motivation to run myself to sweaty exhaustion.

Brooke is a 2010 graduate of The University of Montana, where she ran track and cross country for the Grizzlies. She is currently working as a writer and editor in Missoula.

Even with all of the sun, flowers and barbecues that we’ve been enjoying thanks to the warm weather we’ve had in Missoula recently, it didn’t truly feel like summer until I picked up my first Big Sky Brewing Co. Summer Honey six pack the other day.

I know some of you would probably disagree with me if I said it was the best summer microbrew in Missoula, but I don’t care. It’s the best summer microbrew in Missoula.

Add a cold glass of smooth, crisp Honey — with a twist of lemon, of course — to any summertime activity, and you’ve got a match made in heaven.

Its cool, refreshing taste conjures up memories of backyard cookouts, lazy days on the river and warm summer evenings dining on the decks and patios of my favorite Missoula restaurants.

Even if you’re not that into beer, I recommend giving it a try, especially if you need a change of pace from your standby summertime cocktail. Tasty as they may be, mojitos and margaritas just can’t compare to the versatility of this local favorite.

Since I consider myself somewhat of a Summer Honey connoisseur, I will give you my suggestions on how to enjoy this delicious seasonal brew.

Step One: Remove chilled pint glass from freezer.

Step Two: Pour cold beer into glass tipped at a 45-degree angle.

Step Three: Slice lemon; squeeze juice into beer and drop wedge into glass.

Step Four: Lift glass to lips.

Step Five: Drink and enjoy.

Lamb of God are getting ready to hit the road again, and as is the case with any tour announcement, there are a few fans in certain cities feeling left out on the good times. But rather than gloss over it, singer Randy Blythe headed to Twitter for another rant discussing the booking policies and the group’s involvement in it.

The singer explained, “I do not book our tours. There’s a guy you have to hire when you reach a certain level. He’s called a booking agent. He routes the tour, he deals with the promoters, he gets the tour package the best offers he can get for the tour. I have neither the time, the inclination, or the innate skill for dealing with this s—, nor do I have the contacts or the resources.”

Blythe revealed that if booking were left up to him, fans would be treated to something completely different. He detailed what a tour would look like, beginning with the fact that there would be 15 shows in 30 days, primarily in the South, with a day off every other day to go skateboarding, fishing or book shopping. He adds, “Venues would be crusty punk basements, BYOB, no merch because f— it, I don’t feel like dealing with it. No f—ing autograph signings, only skateboard sessions. Massive amounts of coffee on the rider – that’s it. No cell phones allowed at the show, not because I’m worried about my picture being taken, but because you need to be watching the band, not your f—ing two inch screen.”

As for the crowd, Blythe explains, “Fighting is not only allowed. It’s encouraged. Bail bondsmen business cards will be issued at the door … I will not ask the audience if they are ‘having a good time,’ I will instead throw handfuls of M80s at anyone who looks like they’re bored. That’s my tour. That’s how I would do it.”

He would revisit Twitter for another rant, addressing those who complained about the band not coming to their town. His main advice for those fans is to help build their local scene. He explained that building a local scene means “forming bands, practicing relentlessly, and booking your own shows wherever you can. It also means supporting local shows. That means coming out and seeing what is in your own town.”

Blythe states that when there are a lot of local bands playing, a healthy sense of competition develops and local bands get good. As a result, the scene develops, more people come to shows, a reputation is built, and smaller national acts will drop in for shows. If those go well, then word of mouth will spread to bigger acts to where bands will want to come to your town. He concludes, “Every band is a local band somewhere. We are from Richmond, motherf—ing Virginia and proud of it. Don’t wait for someone to come to your town. Rock the f— outta yer own town. Trust me, it works and it’s fun.”
