Today, July 22, Montana Attorney General Tim Fox joined with 44 additional state attorneys to write a letter to five major phone companies to offer call blocking technology to their customers.

"A couple years ago, an association representative of the major telephone companies testified before Congress that it was against the law to violate or to block cell calls and that the Federal Communications Commission prohibited such blocking," Montana Office of Consumer Protection Chief Edwin Eck said.

According to Eck, Last fall Fox did his research and found that the Federal Communications Committee said it was not illegal and in fact telephone companies could block "robo" calls; because of this, he thinks the phone companies should respond fairly quickly.

"So my guess is, we are going to get some positive responses from these phone companies," Eck said. "That's our hope so the consumers don't have to handle these 'robo' calls."

Fox said call-blocking options already exist for Voice over Internet Protocol phone service and Android cell phones, and the phone carriers should move quickly to implement and inform their consumers of these options.
