Dave Matthews went to Big Sky last weekend to raise cash for conservation, but the other thing he raised was his voice. Just as the band dropped into their first track of the night, Pig, Dave spied a couple of meatheads brawling in the crowd. And being the cool, calm, and collected musical Jedi that he is… he stopped the show to scold them.

He didn’t sugarcoat it either. “Hey dudes, stop... go outside... I don’t want to play one note if you guys are in here. Not one note. I don’t care if you came from Timbuktu… get the f*** out..” Obviously, that’s a tongue-in-cheek paraphrase. The crowd chanted in support, and security ushered him on his way to the door.

This was a different kind of noisy little punk rock moment. What I saw was the Wildlands Festival, a big charity show that reportedly brought in nearly $1.3 million for environmental organizations. Dave himself even contributed $650K through the Bama Works Fund. Lukas Nelson and Molly Tuttle also had cameos, upping the wattage of star power over the course of two days.

Montanans take music seriously. We don’t do fights at shows. We brave the elements, squat in questionable porta-potty lines, and pack into venues just to catch our favorite bands. Hey,  if Dave ever wants to bring his tour through Missoula, he can. And if anyone acts up? We’ll kick ’em out for him. He won't even miss a single beat. On the other hand, I have never seen a mosh pit at a DMB concert.
