Flathead Lake Hosts Rock Skipping Championship This Weekend
Think of all those Summers you spent training for this competition. All the countless hours finding the perfect rock. A rock that is flat and just the right amount of smooth. The rock that is guaranteed to skip its way across the water. Learning that "throwing is half the battle."
It is time to put those skills to work, as the FLATHEAD LAKE ROCK SKIPPING CHAMPIONSHIP returns to Polson this weekend.
This Sunday (6/2) at The Cove Deli and Pizza (11 3rd Ave W, Polson, Montana)
- Registration and Rules Clinic at The Cove 12:45 p.m.
- $20 or $50 for a family. This includes registration, bagpipe marching, a band-led parade to the water, and pizza and pop at the awards ceremony at The Cove following the event.
- Male and Female Divisions 13-under, 14+, and Seniors 65+
- EASY ONLINE REGISTRATION AVAILABLE or Sign up the day of the event.
- This is a BYOR(rocks) event
According to The Lake County Leader, the 2023 competition must have been fun to watch.
George Murphy was the overall winner and took first in the 13-and-over male division with a masterful tally of 18 skips. His tips (a previously closely guarded secret) include: choose a rock that’s a little heavier so it can navigate choppy water; use the middle finger, instead of index, to curl around the rock; and try to give the stone a slight upward tilt as it hits the water.
Now it is your turn to prove you have what it takes to be a CHAMPION!!!! Just make sure to clear off a place for your trophy.
