How ‘WOKE’ is Montana? The Answer May Surprise You

We have heard the term "woke" being used so much over the last few years. But, what does it mean?

According to Wikipedia

Woke (/ˈwoʊk/ WOHK) is a term that originated in the United States, referring to a perceived awareness of issues that concern social justice and racial justice. It derives from the African-American Vernacular English expression stay woke, whose grammatical aspect refers to a continuing awareness of these issues.

It is clear that the 2020 election coupled with the pandemic caused many people to become "woke." Especially after the George Floyd death and the BLM protests that took place all summer. We even saw BLM protests take to the streets here in Montana over the summer of 2020.

But, the question is "How woke is Montana?"

The website Zippia used internet data to rank the most "woke" states in the country. Here's how:

We looked at 6 factors:

• BLM protests attendees
• # of BLM protests
• Voting
• Master’s degree or higher
• Organic farms
• Kombucha consumption

We saw BLM protests in Montana. From hundreds of protesters in downtown Billings laying down in the streets, to hundreds showing up at the Missoula courthouse. We also saw record voting in the 2020 elections. Also, Missoula, Helena, Butte, Billings, Dillon, and Bozeman are no strangers to cranking out some smart people from the university system.

With that said, Montana ranks rather high in the "woke" list of states. According to Zippia, the top 5 states include Oregon at #1, followed by Washington, Vermont, Colorado, and California.

Montana made it just out of the top 10 "woke" states. Landing at #14.
