Is Montana’s Winter 2025 Ending Early? Here’s What to Expect
It’s that time of year when we take a look at The Old Farmer’s Almanac and decide whether or not to brace ourselves for another winter of disorder or several weeks when we can finally store the snow shovel away. Spoiler alert: you may want to hold on to it a little longer. Here’s a breakdown of what’s on the way for the rest of winter 2025.
January: A Frosty Mixed Bag
January has a little drama brewing, because of course it does. Northern Montana remains frigid with temperatures 2 degrees below the average, and southern areas may see a little bit of a warm-up, about 3 degrees above normal. That doesn’t mean no snow in January. Actually, you can anticipate more precipitation than usual. Translation: snow boots and windshield scrapers are still part of your daily routine for the time being.
February: The Strange Phase of Winter
February may be Montana’s equivalent of a mood swing. Temperatures will be about 3 degrees above average (hey, false spring!) The Almanac calls for above-normal precipitation. Meaning, rain, snow or that special Montana combo we call slush. But there’s a wet and wild stretch to watch out for too: Feb. 7-16. Ideal material for snowball fights … or slip-and-slide time on a driveway.
March: Spring? Not So Fast
March is will arrive to show us who’s boss. Plan for even more snowy moments, particularly mid-month. Just when you think about flowers blooming and patios reopening, winter will have one last punch in the gut. Maybe two.
So, What’s the Big Picture?
That’s a warmer-than-average but wetter-than-average winter. With all that wet weather keeping it interesting. That’s classic Montana. Unpredictable enough to never let you get used to it.
