Some Of Montana’s Banned License Plates Are Surprisingly Simple
When Clever Becomes Too Much: Denied Plates
You do not have to drive around Montana for very long to notice one thing. We have a lot of license plate options.
Between wildlife, colleges, causes, and just about everything else you can think of, Montana offers more than 200 sponsored license plates. On top of that, for about 25 bucks more, you can personalize what your plate actually says.

Montana’s License Plate Options Are Nearly Endless
A lot of people take advantage of that option because, honestly, it is pretty affordable. You see everything from Griz and Bobcats pride to inside jokes rolling down the road every single day.
Of course, sometimes folks get a little too clever for their own good. That is when a plate submission gets denied or flat out banned.
Now, obvious stuff like vulgar four-letter words has never been allowed, and we are not even touching those. What we are talking about today are plates that were denied and leave you scratching your head trying to figure out why.
Thousands Of Denied Plates Over the Years
And this is not just a short list. According to sources, Montana has denied or banned well over 4,000 personalized plate submissions over the last 40 years.
Some of them seem harmless. Others make you wonder what the state thought people might read into them.
If you are one of the people who had a plate denied, I would love to hear what reason you were given. Shoot me an email or send us a message through the app.
